How to Make a Cactus Pillow: Free Sewing Pattern

Jennie
August 31, 2024

It seems like everywhere I turn right now, I see a cactus. I can’t go into a store or shop online without running into one somewhere in the process. Since they have been so popular, I thought it would be fun to put together a pattern and tutorial for a cactus pillow. Now we can have these cuties on our couches or beds!

I almost want to call them couch buddies instead of pillows though because of how often my little kids tote them around! It’s adorable that they love them so much.

The finished pillow measures about 16″ tall by 12″ wide. This pattern is for the beginner with some experience.

Pillow Prep

Wash and iron the fat quarters before use.

Cut out the pattern pieces. You should have two mirror images.

Pin the fabric pieces with right sides together and take it to the sewing machine.

Sewing the Pillow

Starting at the bottom, sew all the way around the fabric using 1/4″ seam allowance. Leave two to three inches open at the bottom for turning.

Clip notches into the seam allowance along curves and corners to help the pillow have more shape. Make sure you don’t cut through your stitches!

Turn the pillow right side out through the opening on the bottom.

Tip: I like to use the stuffing tool that comes with the stuffing to push out the curves all the way.

Finishing the Pillow

Using the opening that was left for turning, put the stuffing into the cactus pillow. You can stuff it as much or as little as you want.

Once the pillow is stuffed, Use the needle and thread to hand stitch the opening shut. (I used a whip stitch here.)

Tie off the thread and you are all finished! Now you can enjoy your new pillow. Thank you for reading! Feel free to tag me in your makes on Instagram or facebook, I love to see what you make!
